Covid patients should go to hospitals/treatment centres: Health Ministry

22 Sep 2021

  • Only those supervised under home treatment prog. should remain homebound
By Buddhika Samaraweera The Health Ministry has requested that any Covid-19-infected person be referred to a treatment centre or hospital if they remain at home, except under the home treatment programme operated by the Health Ministry. During a media briefing held yesterday (22), the media inquired from Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath regarding reports that a significant number of Covid-19 patients are staying at home without being referred to hospitals or treatment centres. Commenting on this, Dr. Herath said that it is risky for patients to stay at home without proper medical supervision. At present, he added, the number of daily Covid-19 infections has dropped significantly, and that therefore, there is ample space in hospitals and treatment centres islandwide. “Getting treatment at home is not an approved process, unless it is under the home treatment programme implemented by the Health Ministry. In this situation, where the number of daily infections has significantly reduced, it is best to go to a treatment centre or hospital,” he noted. Dr. Herath further reiterated that those given the opportunity to receive treatment at home under the relevant programme currently being implemented by the Health Ministry may continue to do so, but that if anyone else stays at home without proper medical supervision, it poses a risk to their life. “Under the programme implemented by the Health Ministry, one can stay at home if they have the ability and facilities to receive treatment at home. However, if someone infected with Covid-19 is staying at home without proper supervision, we don’t recommend it at all.”
