The current Covid-19 situation in the country has escalated to this level due to mismanagement from the Government’s part, Samagi Jana Balawageya MP Eran Wickramaratne said in a statement today (29).
“We have been saying from the beginning that this island needs to be protected. We are a small island, we could have minimised the impact. The Government did not pay heed to this. It has been an issue of mismanagement from the beginning,” he said.
While reiterating that this war against the pandemic should have been led by experts in the fields of public health and contagious diseases, Wickramaratne expressed that such experts were unable to do so because the Government was not sensitive to them.
He also pointed out that when the first vaccines came out, they were priced at USD5. However, by the time the Government made the decision to procure them, the price had risen to USD15.
“This is all taxpayers money,” he stated.
The MP stated that the vaccination drive was affected by many delays over months, resulting in the country still being unable to build up desired levels of immunity to the virus.
Addressing his earlier statements in Parliament about the need for a 300 bed mobile ICU unit, Wickramaratne explained that he was voicing the opinion of many doctors.
He further stated that now the time has come for each citizen to protect themselves and their families with utmost care as we cannot rely on others.
“We must overcome this or there is no future,” he opined.
The Parliamentarian once more appealed to the Government to allow the contagious disease and public health experts to advise the citizens on what measures need to be taken.
