COVID third wave is a possibility with New Year: DGHS

01 Apr 2021

Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardene yesterday stated that there is a possibility of a third wave emerging due to the potential recklessness of people during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. “We have already seen the public gathering at shops for the New Year. Even the authorities cannot completely stop this. It is the duty of the public to act responsibly to prevent this,” he stated. He said that a series of health guidelines will be issued to the public today (01) to follow on the occasion of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. “In these guidelines, we have outlined that large gatherings cannot take place during the season. We have also allowed the public to engage in certain sports that do not require a crowd,” he said. This was stated by Dr. Gunawardena while participating in the programme 'Aluth Parlimenthuwa' telecast on TV Derana last night (31). Meanwhile, Head of the National Operations Center for the Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak SHavendra Silva yesterday stated that no musical shows will be allowed during the festive season. “We recognize that this is a hard time especially for musicians because their main income is through shows like this. Since April is a festive month, usually they earn their largest income during this month. We could have allowed such gatherings but we cannot trust the public to be responsible,” he stated.
