The dispensing of fuel at Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC/CEYPETCO) filling stations according to the last digit of the vehicle license plate began yesterday (21), and is expected to continue until 25 July.
Accordingly, the fuel distribution system based on the last digit of the vehicle number plate is as follows: number plates ending with 0, 1, or 2 on Tuesdays and Saturdays, number plates ending with 3, 4, or 5 on Thursdays and Sundays, and number plates ending with 6, 7, 8, or 9 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The public can obtain fuel twice a week according to the last digit of the number plate, using the quick response (QR) code assigned to them.
Furthermore, fuel distribution at CPC filling stations for motorcycles is capped at Rs. 1,500, for three-wheelers at Rs. 2,000, and for other vehicles at Rs. 7,000.
The National Fuel Pass system was also tested at selected filling stations in Colombo from yesterday as a three-day long pilot project and is expected to be implemented systematically at other filling stations in the upcoming days.
Meanwhile, the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) urged the public to be cautious of phishing (attempts to steal one’s money or identity, by getting one to reveal personal information on websites that pretend to be legitimate) scams when entering their personal details into unauthorised sites that pose as the Government-endorsed National Fuel Pass registration site.
Speaking to The Morning yesterday, an ICTA official said that complaints have been received pertaining to fraudulent websites that collect personal information of individuals posing as http://fuelpass.gov.lk, the official website for obtaining the Fuel Pass. “We take full responsibility for the details that are entered on the official site, but we cannot do anything about information entered on fraudulent sites. So, we urge the public to be vigilant about such sites as their information can be misused.”
Speaking further, the official stated that the technical errors that the public faced during registration have largely been resolved. “Due to technical errors, about 4,000 of those who initially registered have been informed to re-register. By 25 July, the glitches will be sorted.”
He also stated that over three million registrations have been made for the Fuel Pass as of yesterday.
The Ministry of Power and Energy introduced the National Fuel Pass in a bid to ease fuel queues and to allow the public to purchase a guaranteed quota of fuel per week for their vehicles. Accordingly, one vehicle can be registered under one National Identity Card, passport number or business registration number, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara said during the launch. A QR code is allocated to each vehicle following the registration and the verification of the chassis number, the vehicle registration number, the number plate and other details by the Motor Traffic Department.
