By Tharumalee Silva The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has warned SriLankan Airlines that they will be forced to suspend the fuel supply to SriLankan Airlines as the airline is in debt to the CPC. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, National Organiser of the National Service Association (Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya) Ananda Palitha stated that certain doubts are being raised as to whether the CPC will continue to supply fuel to the national carrier. “We have notified the relevant authorities at SriLankan Airlines of the increasing debt and requested them to find a solution for this issue before the matter escalates any further. The relevant ministers of all governments have always stated that they would be halting fuel supply to the companies that are in debt. However, the Government intervenes at the last minute and compels the CPC to supply fuel,” he said. He further noted that the Government cannot bear the losses; therefore, it is questionable whether SriLankan Airlines should continue to be under the Government. Ananda Palitha further noted that the CPC was indebted to their relevant banks for a sum exceeding Rs. 1 billion. “The Government must take responsibility to pay off the debt of government agencies. While the Government is providing aid and relief to the people, government agencies are operating on more and more debt," he said. The Sunday Morning contacted CPC Managing Director Neil Jayasekara to confirm if any firm decision had been taken on fuel being supplied to SriLankan but he refused to comment.
