People are in remand for years without evidence of wrongdoing under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), whereas people with evidence against them go free if they side with the Government, alleged Ahila Ilankai Thamil Congress (AITC) MP Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam. He made this statement in Parliament today (21) in reference to the prisoners who are currently in prisons island-wide under the PTA. "If the PTA is amended according to international standards, all PTA prisoners currently in remand will be set free. Not a single person can be held under remand. If you are true and conscious, even the convicted persons must be released. That is the nature of the draconian Act. Whenever this is brought up with, all we are told is that the cases will be expedited and a trial will be done quicker. It never happened, it will never happen,” he said Ponnambalam further went on to opine that it doesn't matter what amendments are made to the PTA by Minister of Justice Ali Sabry, because they would prove useless as such amendments are irrelevant to Sri Lankan society which has now understood the impunities of the legal system, further adding that society will take its own course of action. "That is the danger this country is edging towards day by day," Ponnambalam finally concluded.
