Curfew to be lifted for seven hours today

The islandwide curfew now in force will be lifted at 7.00 a.m. today (12) and reimposed at 2.00 p.m. today, and will be effective until 6.00 a.m. on Friday (13), the President’s Media Division announced yesterday. Earlier, it was informed that the curfew would be lifted at 7 a.m. today. Addressing a media briefing yesterday, Defence Ministry Secretary Gen. (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne said that the Government hopes to lift the existing curfew regulations today. “If there is a problem over the night, we will take the necessary steps for that. We may remove the curfew tomorrow [today] and then impose curfew again for a certain period of time,” said Gunaratne at yesterday’s briefing. The curfew, which was declared on Monday (9) evening, was due to be lifted yesterday morning at 7 a.m. However, on Tuesday (10) night, the curfew was extended till 7 a.m. today.
