Customs nab Rs. 32 mn worth drugs at Central Mail Exchange

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Officers of the Customs Narcotics Division stopped eight parcels on suspicion of containing narcotics during surveillance duties at the Central Mail Exchange and confiscated a stock of cannabis and 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy) worth Rs. 32 million. The parcels were shipped from Germany and Canada to residents in Colombo, Gampaha and Kandy. A subsequent search revealed that the latter were fake addresses. A total of 1,590 g of kush (cannabis) and 601 pills of ecstasy were found in the opened parcels. The market value of the seized drugs was confirmed to be close to Rs. 32 million. The investigation was done with the assistance of the officers of the Postal Department. At the end of the investigation, the drugs are to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
