CWC blames poor communication for not backing SJB’s NCM

17 Apr 2022

By Dinitha Rathnayake The reason for the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) not supporting the no-confidence motion (NCM) to be brought against the Government by the main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), was due to a lack of communication, claimed the CWC. Speaking to The Morning, CWC MP Jeevan Thondaman said that the SJB didn’t even contact the CWC on the matter. “How are we supposed to provide support, or vote against the Government, on such a paper where we are not aware of the content?” He added that the SJB also did not reach out to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), as was confirmed by SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekera. The CWC has thus decided not to support the no-confidence motion to be brought by the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) against the Government, and hopes to abstain from voting on the resolution. The SJB signed a no-confidence motion against the Government and an impeachment motion against the President last Tuesday (12). The NCM is set to be handed over to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene this week. Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa, with his group of MPs, signed the respective motions at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, according to a Facebook post. The Leader of the Opposition said that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya stands together with the people fighting on the streets against the Government, and will work towards all possible democratic victories in Parliament to realise it. He further stated that in addition to the no-confidence motion and the impeachment, they will continue a fight for the reversal of the 20th Amendment and re-enactment of the 19th Amendment, and for all democratic victories by constitutional means.
