Cyber security and data privacy: Securing your footprints

26 Sep 2021

Data breaches can take place on both a large and small scale, but most people are probably more familiar with the bigger incidents. Every employer faces the reality that they could be the target of a network security breach. A cybersecurity breach can jeopardise credibility and cost small businesses without cyber liability insurance thousands of dollars (or more) in damages, impacting customer service, productivity and reputation.  Data breaches are cybersecurity attacks that impact personal data and privacy. It might seem like cybersecurity or information security and data privacy are interchangeable terms, but let’s take a look at the main differences.  What is cybersecurity or information security?  Cybersecurity, or information security, refers to the measures taken to protect a computer or computer system against unauthorised access from a hacker. A robust cybersecurity policy protects secure, critical or sensitive data and prevents it from falling into the hands of malicious third parties. The most common forms of cyber attacks are phishing, spear phishing and injecting malware code into a computer system.  What is data privacy?  Varonis defines data privacy as a type of “information security that deals with the proper handling of data concerning consent, notice, sensitivity and regulatory concerns”. On its most basic level, data privacy is a consumer’s understanding of their rights as to how their personal information is collected, used, stored and shared. The use of personal information must be explained to consumers in a simple and transparent manner and in most cases, consumers must give their consent before their personal information is provided.  Protecting your company from a cybersecurity attack  Ultimately, cybersecurity attacks are trying to get at a person’s or company’s data, and the risk for a data breach at an organisation of any size has become increasingly higher. However, there’s been a distinct focus on cyber security, as companies have grown more aware of the various types of data breaches and the impact they can have on their brand, reputation and customer loyalty, not to mention the costs involved to properly notify all parties of the breach.  Companies are making it a priority to protect their organisations from data breaches by offering data security training, creating a company-wide data breach policy with a response plan ready to implement when/if it is needed. Small businesses can also help prevent data breaches by:
  • Keeping data safe: Because many data breaches happen because of employee error, staff should only have access to the information vital to their particular role within the company
  • Password protection programme: To stay protected from a data breach, small businesses and their employees should use strong passwords for every site accessed on a daily basis
  • Update security software: Companies should utilise firewalls, anti-virus software and anti-spyware programmes to help ensure sensitive data cannot be easily accessed by hackers
  • Employee training: All employees should be trained on the importance and methods of data security
  • Data encryption: All data, whether on a personal device, computer, or server should be protected by proper encryption
Samsung’s efforts in cybersecurity  Samsung protects every aspect of the consumers’ life to guarantee safety and comfort with powerful security solutions. Samsung’s purpose is not just to make better performing products, but to change the everyday lives of users and help them to live a better life thanks to our products, services, and technologies. This is the value that Samsung considers most important, with security solutions that care for users first.  Samsung configures its security system under strict standards. With the growing number of online services, the importance of information stored in devices is also rising. As such, methods of stealing data are becoming more sophisticated and diversified. To counteract these advances, Samsung has added hardware chipsets created with the original technology to mobile devices to prepare in case of any physical hacking. They have built their own security system – from manufacturing to end use – providing a security processor dedicated to handling sensitive data.  Hacking and information leakage can take place in a split second. That is why Samsung closely monitors events in digital devices and networks to detect any malicious intrusion and set up an instantaneous defense system. Furthermore, Samsung detects and preemptively blocks any risks in everyday life such as malware apps or phishing in order to keep user data safe and secure.  Samsung Knox, the security platform that keeps your Galaxy devices safe, has evolved to meet the growing demand for data protection. Currently available on the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung Knox Vault delivers next-level security for your personal data.  Not only does it encrypt your personal data, but the Samsung Knox Vault processor keeps your important information secure, including sensitive information linked to services like Samsung Pay. Any data saved on Samsung Knox Vault storage is isolated from the main operating system for even further protection. Not only is your data secure, it is also protected against a variety of attacks including voltage, temperatures and laser attacks.  Samsung’s purpose is not just to make better performing products, but to change the everyday lives of users and help them to live a better life with their products, services, and technologies. This is the value that Samsung considers most important, with security solutions that care for users first.  The more involved we become with digital devices, the more personal information is stored in these devices – from phone numbers to personally identifiable information (PII), bank accounts and credit card numbers, and biometric information recorded on a daily basis. In today’s world, all of the information representing your identity as an individual is recorded and stored in digital devices.  As the digitisation of everyday life continues to expand, digital security and privacy confront the growing challenges. Accordingly, Samsung is giving our best efforts to developing technologies to solve today’s security issues, while at the same time preparing for the future. We are making a difference for a better life, not just by researching and developing technologies, but also with consideration for ethics of technology, human rights, and social ideals.
