03 Dec 2020

The Central Province Governor has yesterday (02) issued an Extraordinary Gazette Notification to remove Mayor of the Matale Municipal Council Daljith Aluvihare from his position. The Governor said a Commission of Inquiry was appointed by him to inquire allegations made against Mr. Aluvihare. The allegations were made against the Mayor of the Municipal Council Matale by the Deputy Mayor together with a group of council members. Retired High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena of the Commission of Inquiry handed over the report of the investigation to Governor Gamage on 24 November. “Since I am satisfied that there is sufficient proof of misdeeds on the part of Mr. Aluvihare, by virtue of powers vested in me, I hereby remove him from the office,” he said in the gazette. “Further, I order the Commissioner of Local Government, Central Province and Municipal Commissioner of Municipal Council, Matale to act according to the provisions of the amended Local Authorities Elections Ordinance,” he said.
