Dasangee and Minangee: Passion for art connecting two sisters

14 Feb 2021

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna Dasangee and Minangee are two little budding artists from Galle. They are both students of Sangamitta Girls’ College, Galle. Both of them have won many competitions locally and internationally. This week these two sisters spoke to Little Stars on their experiences, what they do to improve their skills in painting, and about their achievements. DASANGEE Tell us about yourself. My name is Dasangee Madhurya Kulatunge. I am nine years old. I am currently studying in Grade Five. Apart from drawing, I love to play chess, play with my sister, and dance. You have won a lot of medals and certificates. Can you tell us which award made you most happy? I feel very happy every time I receive a medal or a certificate. I think the certificates and medals I received from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) and Iran are the most valuable. I received a merit certificate for a drawing I sent for the Kumamoto UNESCO Association of Japan in 2018. The most recent gold medal I received was from the Children's Painting Competition “Clean Hands: Save Lives” (Mashhad, Iran) organised by the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults last year. My sister Minagee also won the bronze medal in this competition. I also won first place in an art competition organised by the Galle Municipal Council and the Richard Pathirana Public Library. One of my drawings, which I submitted for the 2020 International Art Competition “Always Green, Always Blue”, organised by the International Art Project in Toruń, Poland, was also selected to be exhibited in their gallery. I have also won a merit at the National Poster Competition for Schoolchildren organised by the Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) in celebration of World Oceans Day. One of my drawings was also listed as a national-level entry at the Mitsubishi Asain Children’s Enikki Fiesta 2019. There are many more competitions I participated in and many more medals and certificates I received. You said you are also interested in dancing. Tell us about that. Yes. I am a member of the Ranwala Balakaya too. There we get to learn a lot of dancing and singing. The items we learn are creative and mostly have a connection to our folk music and dancing. I really enjoy being a part of it. What is your favourite subject in school? It is really difficult to say. I think I like English the best. What do you like the best – colour pencils, pastel, or watercolours? I have to say colour pencils. They are very easy to use. But I like to draw in all three mediums. Do you have a favourite colour? Yes. Blue is my favourite colour. What do you want to become when you are older? I think I want to become a storywriter; maybe someone like Mrs. Sybil Wettasinghe who draws and writes stories. Even now I like to write small stories; maybe one day I will be able to publish my own book. Is there anyone you want to thank? Yes. Firstly, my parents for encouraging me to do creative work and to draw. They never scold me if I draw on a wall or accidentally break a new toy. They help me to learn how it works. I want to thank my teachers Ms. Deepthi Kodithuwakku, Ms. Sanjeewani Hemakumari, Ms. Sarada, and Ms. Deepika Abeyrathna at the Ranwala Balakaya. My special thanks go to my art teachers, Mrs. Jayanthi from school and Mr. Piyasena Silva. MINANGEE Tell us about yourself too. My full name is Minangi Dasanya Kulatunge. I am 6-years-old and now in Grade Two. I love to draw, sing, and play with my sister. I love when my sister joins me when I start to draw. Then we both continue to draw. Sometimes we make playhouses inside our home using various things like curtains or saris. Then we both play inside those houses for a very long time. Sometimes we watch cartoons too. What is your favourite cartoon? The cartoon I like the best is the Winx Club. This story is set in a magical universe that is full of fairies, witches, and other mythical creatures. My favourite character in it is Bloom. Do you have a favourite colour? Yes, my favourite colour is purple. Was it your sister who inspired you to draw? I think, yes. And my mother too. She is always very helpful when we draw and do crafts. Can you tell us about the art competitions you have participated in? Like my sister, one of my drawings I submitted to the 2020 International Art Competition “Always Green, Always Blue” was selected to be exhibited in their gallery. I won a medal at the “Beautiful Sri Lanka” art competition organised by Seven Seas Sri Lanka. I won second place at the Kodomo Art Competition. My sister won first place in it. I won a bronze medal in the Clean Hands: Save Lives competition last year. I also won a silver prize at the Annual World Children’s Picture Content organised by the IE-NO-HIKARI Association, Japan Agricultural Co-operatives Group. Also, the Junior Picasso 2018 organised by Picasso Creative Skills, India presented me with the seven-star-artist award. I was only four years old. Your sister said she likes to become a storywriter when she is older. Do you also have a dream profession? Well, I too like to become a storyteller. It is fun to tell stories and I love to do that. Sometimes I feel that I would want to become a scientist. But I can’t say for sure; there are a lot of things I like to do. Whom do you want to thank? My parents and my sister for always supporting me. My class teacher, Ms. Wasanthi Nagahawatta, and all my teachers in school. PHOTOS SAMAN ABESIRIWARDANA
