DDGHS responds to mandatory vaccination policy

08 Nov 2021

The legal implications will need to be re-visited if the covid-19 vaccine is made mandatory in public places says Deputy Director General of Health Dr Hemantha Herath. He made this statement while speaking exclusively to The Morning today (08). "We cannot impose such rules unless the legal implications are re-visited. There is a formality, but there is also a social responsibility of the people to help stop the spread of the virus. We are still in the discussion phase and for such a rule to be implemented, we need more time to decide," said Dr Herath. He also added that vaccines or any sort of "medical treatment" cannot be forcefully done to anyone, and so this decision cannot be made in a rush. When further inquired whether regulations would be imposed for the festive season, Dr Herath responded saying that if the covid positive cases keep increasing, regulations might have to come into place again. "There is a rise in the number of patients currently. Closer upon the season, if the case load keeps increasing, we might need to put in place the regulations again. We need to restrict people from partying and also large crowds gathering at churches or homes," he concluded.
