Death row and serious crimes convicts: Relocation to prison in island off Batticaloa

12 Jun 2020

Minister of Justice, Human Rights, and Legal Reforms Nimal Siripala de Silva says his Ministry is looking at the possibility of relocating prisoners sentenced to death or convicted of serious crimes to an island in Batticaloa. De Silva has made this observation during a news conference. He had explained that the island being looked at had been reserved for leprosy patients in Batticaloa and currently accommodates only two patients who are in the process of recovery. According to de Silva, the Prisons Department may take over the island from the health authorities in order to relocate prisoners convicted of serious crimes or sentenced to death to the facility. However, the process is expected to take some time.
