Scores:

New Zealand (won toss) 246/3 in 86 overs at tea (Devon Conway 136 n.o. in 240 balls, Henry Nicholls 46 n.o., Tom Latham 23, Ross Taylor 14, Kane Williamson 13, Henry Nicholls 10 n.o.; Ollie Robinson 2/50, James Anderson 1/55) vs. England

An unbeaten century on debut from Devon Conway kept New Zealand on the front foot at stumps on the first day's play yesterday (2) of the first Test against England at Lord’s.

England, led by two wickets from debutant in Ollie Robinson, tightened up during the afternoon but struggled for breakthroughs on a placid surface during the latter part of play on Wednesday.

Conway lost two experienced partners in Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, but demonstrated an unflappable temperament to remain not out on the day.

Williamson played on to James Anderson. Broad troubled Taylor during a spell from the Nursery End, but it was Robinson who removed New Zealand’s No. 4, pinning him on the front pad to be plumb lbw and leave the tourists on 114 for three.

Conway and Henry Nicholls then restored a sense of equilibrium as Joe Root resorted to bowling himself in the absence of a frontline spinner.
