Decrease in teachers and principals attending GCE O/L exam duties: CTU

01 May 2022

By Buddhika Samaraweera  The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has warned that a sufficient number of teachers and principals will not attend the forthcoming General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) examination related duties, if the relevant allowances paid to teachers and principals are not increased. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (1), CTU President Priyantha Fernando said: “We are of the view that the O/L examination should be held in May, but the allowance paid to teachers and principals for examination duties should be increased. The average payment for a teacher is around Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 2,800 for a principal. That’s not enough. If payments are not increased, the number of teachers and principals attending exam duties will definitely decrease.” Noting that teachers and principals who engage in examination duties often use their personal vehicles for this purpose, he said that in the face of the rapidly rising fuel prices, the payments made are not even enough to buy fuel. “We have to wait in long queues to pump fuel for vehicles. Teachers and principals do not want to be involved in exam duties in the midst of such difficulties. Also, we are not bound to attend examination duties. If these issues are not addressed, teachers and principals will withdraw from these duties even during the examination." Fernando said. Speaking to the media recently, Examinations Department Commissioner General L.M.D. Dharmasena said that the O/L examination would be held from 23 May to 1 June. He also said that the examination papers would be delivered to all provincial educational coordination and regional collective centres by 21 May.
