The Government is to present the expenditure heads of the two defeated ministries to Cabinet and then Parliament, prior to the forthcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, speaking to The Sunday Morning, stated that measures are being taken to get the expenditure heads of the two respective ministries approved after they were defeated in Parliament last week.
The spokesperson said that two ministries, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government will submit the proposals to Cabinet for reconsideration and then to Parliament for approval.
The vote held on Thursday (28) saw Minister Ranawaka’s ministry being defeated with a margin of 14 votes with the Opposition obtaining 38 votes and the Government mustering just 24.
Minister Vajira Abeywardena’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government was also defeated by a majority of 15 votes where the Opposition clinched 38 against the Government’s tally of 23.
Minister Ranawaka told The Sunday Morning that the reason for these defeats were due to a number of front row Members of Parliament being absent when a division was called for by the Opposition in Parliament last week.
“The defeat of both expenditure heads of the two ministries was a result of recklessness on the Government’s part,” Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
