Delays in train operations

28 May 2020

 Commuters’ tardiness delays trains: GMR Train delays had occurred in the last two days mainly due to commuters arriving late at the stations for the relevant health check procedures, Sri Lanka Railways charged. General Manager of Railways (GMR) M.J.D. Fernando said that commuters failed to come early as specified, resulting in trains being delayed down the line. “We have asked all commuters to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure of their train. This is so that all health and safety protocols can be followed before registering the passengers. When they are late, it delays the whole process,” he said, adding that the inclement weather would have contributed to train delays as well. Responding to allegations of a lack of seats, Fernando said that there were ample seats available. “There are around 20-21,000 seats available, and only about 16,500 have been booked. So there are an additional 4,000-5,000 seats vacant,” Fernando said. By Skandha Gunasekara
