Delivery service fees to be regulated

12 Jun 2021

The delivery fees charged by delivery services are to be regulated to a reasonable level, the State Ministry of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection said in a statement yesterday (11). The Ministry revealed that even though consumers are resorting to get their essential items delivered to their homes during the ongoing travel restrictions, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has received complaints over high prices charged by some delivery services. Accordingly, following a discussion held with State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna and delivery service providers, a decision has been taken to implement two measures in order to keep the prices charged by delivery services at a reasonable level:
  1. To initiate registration of delivery service providers with the CAA and regulation to ensure reasonable prices
  2. To formulate a policy on calculation of commissions and transport charges and impose a reasonable cap for selected sub-sectors
The Ministry stated that such regulations will improve the competitiveness within the industry while creating a space to expand such businesses.
