Delta found in Galle and Matara

  • Earlier detected in Colombo, Jaffna, and Kilinochchi Districts
  • May have spread to other districts too: Health Ministry  
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  In addition to the Colombo, Jaffna, and Kilinochchi Districts, cases reported bearing the the Delta variant of Covid-19 (Indian variant/B.1.617) have been reported in the Galle and Matara Districts too, and the Ministry of Health assumes that it may also have spread to other Districts.  When contacted by The Morning, Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath said that patients infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19 have been identified from these five Districts.  “But that does not mean that the Delta variant has not spread to other areas. There is a possibility for Delta variant infections to be reported from other Districts as well,”  he opined.  Dr. Herath pointed out that the guidelines given by the health authorities must be followed as soon as a person is reported to be infected with this variant from a particular area.  “There is no point in declaring the number of patients in numbers. Then people may think that there are only that number of patients, but the reality is that one patient reported with the Delta variant means there could be many more patients around that area,” he said.  On 15 July, another 19 patients had been found to be infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19, and Dr. Herath had said that the said 19 cases had been reported from the Colombo, Jaffna, and Kilinochchi Districts.  Dr. Herath on 13 June confirmed that 24 patients infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19 had been detected in Sri Lanka thus far.  “14 patients were detected first, and thereafter 10 others were detected,” he told The Morning.  Accordingly, the detection of 19 patients on 15 July had brought the total of Delta variant infections in the country to 43.  The Delta variant of Covid-19, which is said to be 50% more transmissible than the currently spreading alpha (UK variant/B.1.1.7), was for the first time in Sri Lanka detected from a community sample on 17 June. According to University of Sri Jayewardenepura Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine Director Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the variant had first been detected among five community samples obtained from the Dematagoda area in Colombo.  The Delta variant of Covid-19 has been detected in at least 111 countries and is likely to become the dominant variant globally over the coming months, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently warned.
