  • Mobile bread vendors out of business
  • Bakery Owners’ Assn. warns of impending Rs. 50 bread flour hike
BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The demand for bakery products has decreased due to the recent price hike, stated the All-Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association. Speaking to The Morning, Association Chairman N.K. Jayawardena said that the island’s mobile bread vendors have also disappeared due to the decrease in bakery products. “People cannot afford to buy bakery products due to the price increase. As the Association, we have no option but to increase the price when fuel, gas, flour, margarine, and egg prices increase. The retail price of an egg has increased up to Rs. 40 now.”  He also said that out of 7,000 bakeries islandwide, nearly 2,000 have been closed due to the shortage of gas and fuel. Jayawardena added that the shortage of fuel, as well as the increase in the price of bread flour, has affected this situation. If this situation continues, there will be long queues to buy bakery products in the future, he said. He also said that there are plans to increase the price of bread flour by another Rs. 50 soon. At present, the price of a fish bun has gone up to Rs. 120, while that of a 1 kg cake has gone up to Rs. 1,000.
