Dengue on the rise, outbreak inevitable

18 Jan 2022

The National Dengue Care Unit has released the latest figures of the number of dengue patients for the last week (10th to 16th Jan). Speaking to The Morning, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr Sudath Samaraweera said that Sri Lanka must brace itself for another dengue outbreak. "The last severe outbreak we saw was in 2017, hospitals were full and healthcare workers worked endlessly to control and treat patients. Sri Lanka seems to be on the verge of facing another outbreak soon as the numbers are doubling every month. Patients must ensure they get treated properly in the case they are positive for Dengue to avoid hemorrhagic fever," he said. Within the last week alone, a total of 2081 patients were detected, with the highest number in the Colombo district amounting to 528 patients. Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam had 442 patients, 155 patients and 138 patients respectively.
