Dengue to peak in June

21 May 2020

Authorities are expecting a rise in dengue cases in the coming weeks with an expected peak in June. National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) Director Dr. Anura Jayasekara said that with the rains, an increase in dengue cases was expected. “With the rains and flooding, the chances for mosquito breeding grounds to multiply is high, so there’s a high possibility for an uptick in dengue cases,” he said. Dr. Jayasekara noted that steps have already been taken to mitigate the spread. “We have given directives at the provincial and local government level to carry out dengue prevention programmes.” “These include house-to-house monitoring and eradication of mosquito breeding grounds,” he said.eradication of mosquito breeding grounds,” he said. He noted that the dengue mosquito spread has been under control in the past few months and that pattern was unlikely to change. “Even with the rains, we predict we will be able to control the dengue issue.” By Skandha Gunasekara
