22 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, around 44,000 Sri Lankans have left the country for foreign employment so far this year, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). SLBFE General Manager W.M.V. Wansekera told The Morning that a total of 182 Sri Lankans had left the country last month, while another 210 have registered with the Bureau to leave for foreign employment. The majority of these migrant workers have left for Dubai, Romania, and the Maldives, he said. “Including all new registrations and those who are returning, a total of 840 have been registered so far this month,” Wansekera added. He noted that the sector at present was showing gradual improvement, while major improvement is expected with the reopening of airports and flight operations returning to normalcy. “At present, these migrant workers are leaving the country only through cargo flights and several other flights in operation. But once air travel returns to normal, there would be a massive increase,” he explained. Meanwhile, the SLBFE has introduced a new procedure to grant recommendations for migrant workers who lost employment due to the Covid-19 outbreak, to seek employment at other places of work. According to the Bureau, the new procedure was introduced with effect from 15 September and all foreign employment agents were informed of the new procedure via a circular. Under the new procedure, migrant workers who are unable to return to the island and whose contracts have expired will be able to engage in other employment. The approval in this regard and the security stamp for the passport could be obtained from the Labour Welfare Division of Sri Lankan Foreign Missions overseas.
