Dematagoda isolated for 2 weeks

21 Jun 2021

  • Vaccination to be expedited in the area

By Buddhika Samaraweera   Following last week’s detection of the B.1.617.2 Delta variant of Covid-19 from Aramaya Place and 66 Watta areas in the Dematagoda Police area in Colombo, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) plans to conduct a review after 14 days regarding the reopening of these areas, which are currently placed in isolation. When contacted by The Morning, the CMC Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said that sometimes the lockdown situation would have to be extended for a period of another 14 days after the relevant review. He also said that on 19 June, Covid-19 vaccines were given to the residents of Aramaya Place and 66 Watta areas. According to Dr. Wijayamuni, the first dose of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine had been administered to nearly 800 people living in those areas and the second dose would be given in a period of one month. Speaking further, he said that steps would be taken to provide the Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible to residents who have not been vaccinated in those areas. In addition, random PCR tests would be conducted in the area on a regular basis, he mentioned. The highly transmissible B.1.617.2 Delta variant, better known as the Indian variant as it was first discovered in India, was detected from the community for the first time in Sri Lanka on 17 June in these areas. According to University of Sri Jayewardenepura Allergy, Immunology, and Cell Biology Unit Director Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the variant had been detected among five community samples obtained from the Dematagoda area. Accordingly, although the travel restrictions imposed to control the spread of the Covid-19 Pandemic were lifted at 4 a.m. today, a few areas – including said two areas in the Dematagoda Police area – would be placed under isolation, National Operation Centre for Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Head Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva announced yesterday (20). The Government decided to lift the travel restrictions imposed islandwide from 4 a.m. today to 10 p.m. on 23 June. However, Gen. Silva announced yesterday that a total of 24 grama niladhari (GN) divisions in 12 districts would be isolated from 4 a.m. today. Accordingly, in addition to the Aramaya Place and 66 Watta GN Divisions in the Dematagoda Police area in the Colombo District, Yatihena, Siyambalapewatte, and Nahena GN Divisions in the Gampaha District, New Walathapitiya GN Division in the Ampara District, Eravur, Meeravodi East, Meeravodi West, and Manchakolai Baduriya GN Divisions in the Batticaloa District are in isolation from 4 a.m. today. Also, Dapane, Kelandagala, Mulle Kanda Watta, and Kottala GN Divisions in the Ratnapura District, Mahawaskaduwa South and Mineritenna Tsunami Village GN Divisions in the Kalutara District, Sawatkaddu GN Division in the Jaffna District, Demada Oya, Nikagolla, Nikagolla North, Kiwulawadiya and Guruwela GN Divisions in the Matale District, and Marakkalagama GN Division in the Puttalam District will be isolated from 4 a.m. today. In addition, Kadawalawatta GN Division in the Nuwara Eliya District, Bolthuduvagama in Gonagala GN Division, and Pelena South GN Division in the Matara District will also be placed under isolation status.
