Development of 10 roadways in the South: Govt. to borrow Rs. 15 b from China

o Cabinet of Ministers grants approval o Highways Ministry yet to be informed By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Highways Ministry is looking at borrowing Rs. 15 billion from the China Development Bank to develop 105 km of road in Matara and Hambantota, The Morning learnt. The proposal submitted by the Highways Ministry to obtain Rs. 15 billion from China under their economic development programme, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday (6), Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said. He said the funds would be utilised to develop 10 roadways in the country. Accordingly, the Beliatta-Kirinda stretch of road and the Akuressa-Kamburupitiya, Tangalle-Weeraketiya, Walasmulla- Weeraketiya, Weeraketiya-Middeniya, Walasmulla-Nathuwala, Katuwana-Urubokka, Sumihirigama-Nathuwala, Walasmulla- Dewalegama, and Narandeniya-Hakmana roads in the Matara and Hambantota Districts would be developed under the programme. When contacted, Highways Ministry Secretary and Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman Ranjith Premasiri told The Morning that the Cabinet decision had not yet been communicated to the Ministry, and therefore, he was not aware of the decision in detail.
