By Uwin Lugoda Girandurukotte in Badulla is set to receive long overdue developments in the coming months, The Sunday Morning learns. Girandurukotte, which was last developed all the way back in 1962, has been marked for development by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) under the Government’s ‘One Hundred Cities’ mega-project. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, UDA Media Spokesperson Prasad Manju stated that the town is being developed for the first time since its inception, with the goal of developing the neglected town from its current state to that of a new city. “This is the first time Girandurukotte is being developed since it was first constructed. This town was built under the first Mahaweli Movement after Independence and has not received any government attention. We are now attempting to turn this town into a city, under the guidance of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa,” said Manju. He stated that under this development project, Girandurukotte will see developments in the landscape, construction of roundabouts, sidewalks, main roads, and byroads. He explained that the development project will consist of several phases, with the first phase set to showcase the fastest development. Manju stated that the UDA has already commenced construction on the town’s rundown main road and two sub-junctions, where they will look to replace all the old broken side walls within the town with new walls and repair broken sidewalks. He shared that the city’s existing parking lot will be expanded, and a new car park will be built in its place. This new car park is being constructed to accommodate up to 25 vehicles and with a decorated protective wall surrounding it. The UDA has also made plans to beautify the town by planting grasses suitable for the arid and harsh conditions of the area, and flowering trees such as bougainvillaea that would best suit the area. The project further addresses the town’s need for a sports ground, library, social development programmes, welfare activities, and religious programmes, which play a prominent role in these rural communities. “The youth in the area have pointed out the need for these extracurricular activities and learning tools. Due to this, we have given prominence to sports and educational services in the project. Even though agriculture has been the town’s lifeblood, the parents are also of the opinion that the availability of these facilities will help their children advance in life,” said Manju. According to Manju, those living in the town believe that this development was long overdue, with most being tired of the unavailability of some basic facilities otherwise available across the country. He stated that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s One Hundred Cities project was hence well received by the community. “As a trade and business strategy for Girandurukotte, the UDA believes that a vegetable wholesale centre for the region would be ideal. This will make way for new businesses and will also indirectly provide employment opportunities, which will generate new sources of income.” Manju stated that another rural town in Badulla on its way to a long overdue city status is Spring Valley. He explained that this town has also been neglected by previous Governments, leading to the community lacking essential facilities. “The community has expressed their appreciation for our One Hundred Cities project since it is bringing the needed attention to rural towns. This small tea plantation town contributes directly to the Sri Lankan economy and the survival of the local tea industry, and is a popular tourist destination among both local and foreign tourists. However, they lack the basic facilities required by the people,” Manju explained. He pointed out that the town has a bus stand without a bus stop, no sanitary facilities for those visiting, and is in need of some payment repairs. He went on to state that the UDA has plans to address this by including a new bus stop, toilets for men, women, and the disabled, and payment repairs in their development plan. The development projects in both Girandurukotte and Spring Valley have already commenced and will be completed in the coming months, the UDA said.
