‘Devi Balika Front’ threatens legal action against expansion

03 Jun 2021

By Buddhika Samaraweera   In response to a recent letter sent to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa by the administration of the Devi Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo requesting the President to continue plans to merge part of the said vidyalaya with the Sri Wijayarama Maha Vidyalaya in Udahamulla, the Devi Balika Vidyalaya Protection Front, comprised of past pupils, alleged that the school’s Principal is supporting the project for personal gain.     The said letter had pointed out to President Rajapaksa that the said project would bring progressive results to the school. It was signed by the school’s Development Society and Management Committee, the Principal P.K. Samarasinghe, two Deputy Principals who are in charge of Administration and Education, three Additional Principals, three Sectional Heads in charge of the subjects of Physics, Biology, and Technology, and another 15 members who represent the said Society and the Committee. However, when contacted by The Morning, Devi Balika Vidyalaya Protection Front President Dayani Panagoda claimed that the said letter may have been written under the influence of some party, adding that legal action would be initiated if this project is not suspended. Adding that the Devi Balika Vidyalaya is not merely a composite of its Principal, School Development Society, and Management Committee, Panagoda said that it is therefore not possible for those parties alone to take such a serious decision regarding the school. She alleged that even though all other parties, including school girls, teachers, parents, and alumni, were opposed to the project, the Principal was attempting to intimidate the teachers to get them to support the implementation of the said project. "During a recent discussion, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris and Government MP Madhura Withanage not to relocate any part of the Devi Balika Vidyalaya and to leave it to be as it is. Premier Rajapaksa advised them to develop the Sri Wijayarama Maha Vidyalaya instead. In addition, an alumnus of the Devi Balika Vidyalaya, State Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola informed us that President Rajapaksa had also instructed to suspend this project,” she claimed. Panagoda therefore claimed that the said letter sent to the President by the school’s administration requesting to continue with the project, in such a situation, constituted a disregard for the instructions given by both the President and the Premier. “Such projects are not mentioned in the President's manifesto. In that context, this attempt by the school’s administration distorts his manifesto merely to plunder valuable lands,” she further alleged. According to her, the Principal had also had a meeting with the members of the branch of the school’s Past Pupils Association (PPA) based in Australia in the midst of which she (the Principal) had left the said online meeting without giving proper answers to the questions raised during it. "The Principal knows that there is a great resistance from the past pupils, past teachers, and past principals. Therefore, she is trying to manipulate the School Development Society, of which she is the President. Furthermore, she is avoiding a special general meeting for the Membership of the PPA, knowing very well that she will get defeated," Panagoda further alleged. She noted that any development to the Devi Balika Vidyalaya should be carried out in a transparent manner and that they do not trust the incumbent Principal anymore.
