Devjan: A multi-talented champion

05 Apr 2020

Devjan is 10 years old and currently studies in grade 6 at Colombo International School. He enjoys a variety of extracurricular activities including music, singing, drama, and sports like swimming and basketball. He is also a student of Siri Sudassanarama Dhamma School. This little champion is the Vice Swimming Captain of the junior swimming squad. Winning distinctions for his drama examinations, Devjan portrayed his talents well in the recent school production Annie Jr. as “Drake the butler”. He is also a basketball player, swimmer, and very passionate traveller. Since when do you participate in stage plays? Since 2015. Apart from Annie Jr., I have participated in few other school plays like Children of Rock, Tanya the Tooth Fairy, and a drama developed from Dr. Suess books. I really enjoy taking part in these plays and my favourite character out of all the roles I have played so far is from Children of Rock. Tell us about your training in music. I have been singing from my small days. My family has a background in music too. I am the only grandson of late music legend Mr. Henry Caldera. I think this background encouraged me to be passionate about music. I attend music training classes conducted by “Music Matters” and they train me in playing the piano, drums, as well as train my voice. I also followed voice training classes conducted by Ms. Kumudini David at “Music Matters”. I am also attending musical theatre lessons conducted by Soul Sounds Academy headed by Ms. Soundarie David and guitar lessons conducted by Mr. Keerthi Pasqual. As a student of Ms. Sonali De Soysa, I received the opportunity to participate in the annual concert “Little Sopranos” in 2015, and in 2018, I participated in the annual concert of Soul Sounds Academy “When You Believe”. I have also completed the Trinity Graded Examination in Speech and Drama up to grade 3 and I have received distinctions so far. Also, I really enjoy being a member of the school choir. You mentioned that you take part in sport as a hobby. What sports do you take part in? Well, yes. I am taking part in swimming and basketball. I have been an active swimmer from 2012 onwards and currently I am a member of the school swimming squad. I have been playing basketball from 2015 and tennis from 2013. Although it is a hobby, I have taken part in many competitions too. In 2018 I participated in the Inter House Football Tournament representing Red House – which came in third place and the Inter House Basketball Tournament in 2018 also for Red House – which became the champion house. I was the Basketball Vice Captain for Red House in this tournament. What are your other interests? I am also interested in computer studies. I am preparing to sit for the final exam in Computer Pioneers. When I have free time, I also love to ride my bicycle. Watching movies is also something that you enjoy doing. What is your favourite movie? My favourite movie is Spider-Man, I think he is really cool because he is capable of doing so many good things including helping those who need help. Apart from movies, I also enjoy watching documentaries on countries, food, and travelling. If someone gives you a chance to have a superpower, what superpower would you like to have? I’d like to have the power to fly. I would like to be able to fly really fast so that I can get to people who are in need of help really fast. That will be such a wonderful thing to do. What is your future goal? I want to be a traveller in future. I want to travel around the world, see new places, and taste new dishes. I like new experiences. Where have you travelled so far? I have been to Singapore, Maldives, Dubai, Thailand, and also China. Out of these countries my favourite country was Dubai. What is a country you haven’t been to so far and dream to travel to? That would be the United States of America. As an experienced traveller, do you have any tips for Little Stars readers who wish to travel? Well, considering what’s happening in the world these days I would ask them to be very careful and give priority to their health. Always make sure you follow proper hygienic routines. Best thing to do these days is to avoid travelling as much as possible. We can do that (travel) when this threat of virus infection is not there anymore. When it is so and you can travel again, make sure that you choose the correct clothes for the correct weather. Always check the weather of the place or country you are travelling to. You don’t want to take winter clothes to a sunny country or light clothes to a very cold country. That’ll be a mistake. I usually pack my own clothes and I make sure I pack the right things. Also make sure not to leave your parents’ sight when you are travelling, especially if it is a place which is not familiar to you. You have to think about your safety all the time.   PHOTOS ESHAN DASANAYAKA
