Devkith is mastering the melodica

Devkith Siyambalapitiya from Colombo 9 is a youngster who is passionate about playing the melodica and singing. He also plays chess and swims. Although he isn’t yet learning advanced mathematics in school, he said he loves to do math.

Devkith, tell us about yourself.
My name is Devkith Sehas Aaradhya Siyambalapitiya and I live in Colombo 9 with my mother, father, grandparents, and my punchi. I am the only child. I love to draw and paint, sing, dance, learn how to read, and play with my toys.

Are you learning to play any musical instruments?
Yes. I am learning to play the melodica, and I love to play tunes using it. I learn at my nursery school and my
mother also helps me learn it.
Do you have any hobbies, Devkith?
Yes. My hobbies are cycling and drawing. I find riding my bicycle exciting. I learned how to ride it recently.
I also draw and use lots of colours. It’s nice when you have a lot of colours to draw with.
I also like to sing. My mother says I sing very well.

Have you participated in competitions?

Not really, but I have participated in singing events. Recently, I participated in a Poson Bakthi Gee programme. I had to practise a lot to remember the songs. But now that I remember the songs, I am very happy.

Why did you start playing chess?
I have seen people play chess and they look very serious doing it. So I wanted to see how it is. When I told my mother about this, she took me to a class. I play chess with my friends and family when they are free.

How do you spend your day?
I go to school in the morning, after which I stay with my mother at her workplace for some time. Then, I come
home to watch cartoons and play. When my mother comes back, we practise songs and the melodica. Some days, I go for swimming and chess lessons.
What do you hope to do when you are older?

I want to do a lot of things; I want to continue to sing, paint, and play chess. But I also like to become a doctor so that I will be able to use the stethoscope and help people.
