A proposal given by the Peradeniya University’s Geology Department saying that burial of COVID victims can be done at the Kuppiyawatta Cemetery, Dematagoda has been disregarded by the Director General of Health Services, stated Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP S M Marikkar today. “The report of the University’s Geology Department has been sent to the Health Services Department, signed by Prof. Athula Senarathne. It stated that the water level was 2.5 meters below the burial ground at Kuppiywatta Cemetery, thus making it a suitable place for burial of COVID victims. As it was revealed by the WHO and other medical authorities, the burial of COVID victims’ bodies do not pose a threat to others’ health,” he said. He further accused the Director General of Health Services for going beyond the law when both the Minister of Health and the Prime Minister had given permission for the burial of COVID victims’ bodies under health regulations. “Someone should take responsibility for the forced cremations taking place now as a gazette has been issued allowing burials,” he stated.
