26 Mar 2021

Prof. G. L. Peiris, Minister of Education, said today that the entire nation's support is needed to reform the education system and to digitalise it. The Minister pointed out that computer technology, information technology and language knowledge should be added to the curricula. He said that not enough attention has been paid to them in this regard for decades. Thd Minister also said that the innate ability and creativity of the youth is the backbone of the country. "What we need from education is to develop and nurture that ability to the maximum and our education should be changed to suit the existing social needs," he said. The Minister was addressing the inaugural function of the 'Digital Platform' for public consultation on new educational reforms at Temple Trees today (26) under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “If anyone asks me what is the biggest problem in the field of education today, the answer I can give without hesitation is that there is a huge gap between the education and livelihoods that our children are provided through schools, institutions and universities. That is not a good sign at all. It leads to the development of 'youth unrest'. We hope to reduce that gap as much as possible. If we want to give good jobs to our children, we have to reform our education system, ”he said. He said that the need of the hour was to develop the skills of the child such as productivity, creativity and ability to face life's challenges instead of the method of rewriting what was memorized and getting extra marks in the examination.
