Display of preferential number outside offices: EC says no written requests

10 Jul 2020

The Election Commission (EC) said that it will not entertain requests that are made over phone calls, and if the political parties need the commission to consider amending campaign-related regulations, they should send it in writing to the commission. “If they want us to consider any requests it should be done in writing, so that the commission members could deliberate on it and announce a decision. So far, they have asked over the phone and we have not agreed to their requests to display candidate numbers and symbols outside offices,” EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told The Morning. Political party representatives as well as election monitors have made comments publicly on the need to amend the election campaign regulations to permit the display of the candidates’ symbols and preferential numbers outside their political offices.
