Distribution of compensation to fishermen for X-Press Pearl crisis begins: Ministry

Distribution of the first installment of compensation following the X-Press Pearl disaster to fishermen in areas where fishing was banned has begun, stated that State Ministry of Fisheries today. "The government received $ 3.2 million as the first installment of the compensation. Of this, US $ 2 million will be provided to about 16,000 fishermen in 27 fields. The relevant amount will be credited to the accounts of the fishermen," they said in a statement. State Minister of Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekera, Negombo Mayor Dayan Lanza, Colombo District Parliamentarian Premanath Dolawatta and officials of the Ministry of Fisheries were present on the occasion. The Minister of State who expressed his views while handing over the relevant compensation to the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara District Officers said, "The compensation was never a political decision but a decision made on the recommendation of two committees and that anyone could appeal, according to public notices."
