Dr. Shafi’s salary arrears: Pledges to donate Rs. 2.67 Mn to facilitate purchase of medicines

13 Jun 2022

Dr. Shafi Sihabdeen of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital has pledged to donate a sum of Rs. 2.67 Mn from his salary arrears to facilitate the purchase of medicines for the country.  The controversy around Dr. Shihabdeen, who was serving at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, erupted when a Sinhala newspaper ran a front-page lead story in May 2019, alleging that a Muslim doctor had performed illegal sterilisation operations on over 4,000 Sinhala-Buddhist mothers. Coming just one month after the Easter Sunday terror attacks, and with anti-muslim sentiment at fever pitch, the story spread like wildfire, leading to mass hysteria. The unnamed doctor in the article was later identified as Dr. Shihabdeen, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) shortly after on suspicion of unlawfully acquiring assets. Dr. Shihabdeen had filed the writ application seeking a court order directing the respondents to pay him the salary arrears and allowances for the period he was on compulsory leave over false accusations. Last week, the Ministry of Health agreed to settle the overdue wages of Dr. Shafi Sihabdeen before the 10th of July 2022.
