Driven out Hambantota family to get Mahaweli land

15 Jun 2021

By Buddhika Samaraweera   The Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka (MASL) has taken steps to provide a land belonging to the Authority to a mother and her two children who were living in a house that was recently demolished by a group in the Galwewa Grama Niladhari (GN) Division in Hambantota. The Hambantota Port Police have also taken steps to file a case with the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court against those involved in the said incident. When inquired about this, Galwewa GN Division GN Officer R.S. Handunnetti told The Morning that the affected family was currently living in a rented house in the Galwewa area. She added that necessary steps have already been taken to obtain land for them through the Mahaweli Authority. Accordingly, the relevant documents have been prepared and it is hoped that the arrangements would be completed through the Authority within the next few days. The woman who lived in the said house had recently lodged a complaint with the Hambantota Port Police Station, claiming that more than 50 people had come, demolished her house, and dragged her out with her two children. However, an official of the Hambantota Port Police, when contacted by The Morning, said the dispute had arisen as the house in question had been built on land belonging to the offending party. They had pressured her to leave the land on several occasions and the Ambalantota Police had, prior to the establishment of the Hambantota Port Police, conducted investigations into the matter on several occasions. It has also been referred to the Mayurapura Mahaweli Superintendent’s office to resolve the issue, he added.
