The Department of Prisons has decided to use drone camera technology to ensure the security and administration of prison premises, according to Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake.
He said yesterday (19) that the Department had decided to use the drone technology to ensure the security at prison premises and that a drone camera had been purchased for this purpose recently.
Ekanayake further said that a team of trained prison officers had been deployed to activate the drone camera and the main objective was to ensure the security of the prisons.
When asked if separate drone cameras had been purchased for prisons islandwide, he said that one drone camera had been purchased for all prisons, which would be used in cases of emergency.
Incidents of mobile phones, drugs, and other illicit items being held in prisons by inmates are frequently reported. Furthermore, more than 10 inmates were killed in a shooting at the Mahara Prison in November last year.
