17 Sep 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is assisting authorities to better manage traffic congestion in Colombo. "The drones are used to identify congested areas and that information is relayed to the traffic police control units so that they can divert traffic accordingly,” SLAF Media Spokesman Group Capt. Gihan Seneviratne told The Morning. The SLAF used four drones at the entry points to Colombo and covered the areas of Rajagiriya, Borella, Galle Road, and Nugegoda. Furthermore, he said that the SLAF drones were also used in an effort to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds. He noted that following a request by the Western Province Governor, the SLAF had teamed up with the National Dengue Control Unit for this endeavour. “At the request of the Western Province Governor, we deployed drones to locate dengue mosquito breeding sites. We were given various locations by the Dengue Control Unit and the drones were used to isolate areas that have garbage and rooftops with water collection points." He said that several areas in Colombo and its outskirts were surveilled in such a manner.
