Drought won’t impact tea farmers: Kanaka Herath

02 Nov 2021

Tea farmers will not face difficulties due to the drought next year, said State Minister of Tea and Rubber Export Promotion Kanaka Herath. He stated this while speaking to the media following a ceremony to train tea smallholders who had applied for the Government’s concessionary sprinkler systems, held at the Dehiowita Pradeshiya Sabha premises, recently. The project is conducted by the Tea Small Holdings Development Authority in collaboration with the private sector. Under the project, tea farmers will be provided with sprinkler systems, valued at Rs. 250,000, at a concessionary price of Rs. 70,000. The Government allocates Rs. 180,000 for each system, Herath said. The State Minister noted that the project is expected to be completed within the next year, adding that the tea farmers will not suffer due to the drought thereafter. This project was added to the Budget 2020/21 by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as then Finance Minister in 2020.
