Easing traffic in Colombo: Work hours to be revised

10 Jun 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Government is to take measures to change the working hours of the private sector in order to reduce traffic congestion, The Morning learnt. Minister of Transportation Mahinda Amaraweera said that the revised work hours would be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “The government services would operate at the normal time from 8 a.m. The initial proposal is to change the private sector working shift to 10 a.m.-6 p.m. This will help reduce the amount of traffic on the road considerably,” he said. The Minister said he was awaiting proposals regarding the initiative which would see private sector employees working on a different shift. “I have called for a proposal on this and the practicality of changing the private sector working hours. I expect the proposal will be submitted in the next few days,” the Minister said. The Minister noted that this change was essential in order to implement the health guidelines for the Restart Sri Lanka programme. “This kind of change is needed as it would not be possible to properly implement health guidelines while trying to normalise social and economic activities in the country.” Minister Amaraweera had proposed this initiative during a meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and a private bus union on Monday (8).
