Easter attacks justice: SJB urges public support black flag protest

20 Aug 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has requested the public to support the black flag protest organised by the Catholic church, which to be held tomorrow (21) over what the Catholic church calls the continued inaction of the Government with regard to prosecuting the perpetrators behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks of 21 April 2019. Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday (19), SJB Parliamentarian Dr. Kavinda Heshan Jayawardhana, whilst calling on all citizens to support the church’s protest by hoisting a black flag on the day, noted that all should come together to ascertain the truth behind the carnage. On 13 August, Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith called on the Catholic community to stage a black flag protest tomorrow over what the Catholic church calls the continued inaction of the Government with regard to prosecuting the perpetrators behind the attacks. However, the Attorney General had recently decided to indict several suspects in connection with the attacks. On 21 April 2019, Easter Sunday, three churches (St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade, and Zion Church in Batticaloa) and three luxury hotels in Colombo (Cinnamon Grand Colombo, The Kingsbury Colombo, and Shangri-La Colombo) were targeted in a series of co-ordinated Islamist terrorist suicide bombings. Later that day, another two bomb explosions took place at a house in Dematagoda and the Tropical Inn Lodge in Dehiwala. A total of 267 people were killed in the bombings, including at least 45 foreign nationals, and around 500 were injured. All eight of the suicide bombers behind the attacks were Sri Lankan citizens associated with the National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ) organisation founded by the suicide bomber at Shangri-La Colombo, Mohamed Cassim Mohamed Zaharan alias Zaharan Hashim.
