Easter attacks report: No timeframe for Prez to respond

02 Feb 2021

There is no specific time frame for a response from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the report handed over to him by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing Easter Sunday attacks, The Morning learnt. “We cannot confirm a time of response to the report due to the volume of the report,” Director General of President’s Media Mohan Samaranayake told The Morning yesterday (1). The report is said to be over 1,000 pages long. Samaranayake said that if there are any decisions to be taken based on the report, the President would take necessary actions accordingly. Former President Maithripala Sirisena appointed the PCoI in September 2019 to probe the terrorist attacks that occured on Easter Sunday in 2019, where 270 lives were taken and 500 were injured. Accordingly, the Commission recorded evidence from 457 people for 214 days to compile the six-volume report. The Commission consists of Supreme Court Judge Janak de Silva, Court of Appeal Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, retired Supreme Court Judges Nihal Sunil Rajapaksha and A.L. Bandula Kumara Atapattu, former Secretary to the Ministry of Justice R. Adhikari, and Secretary to the Commission Buwaneka Herath.
