Easter justice seeker summoned to CID

23 Aug 2021

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  A youth who had expressed his views through social media that justice should be done regarding the Easter Sunday massacre has been summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department's (CID) Intelligence Unit.  The Officer-In-Charge of the CID’s Intelligence Unit, Kelum Karunaratne has informed the youth in writing to appear before the Intelligence Unit. The letter says that the youth has been summoned to the CID to inquire into the fact since the CID has launched a special investigation into criminal activities in various parts of the country. He was summoned to appear before the CID at 4 p.m. yesterday (23). The suspect is Shehan Malaka Gamage, a resident of Hiniduma, Galle, who works as a Catholic Council member and a social worker. He had said on Facebook that there was a political link behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks and that the Government should therefore conduct an inquiry into the matter.  Meanwhile, the Editor of local YouTube channel Voice Tube, Thushara Sewwandi Vithanage, was also summoned before the CID last month.  Speaking to The Morning, Vithanage said that she was summoned by the CID based on a complaint filed by the Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana.  A complaint had been filed with regard to a statement made by the All Ceylon Canteen Owners Association President Asela Sampath which was published in the Voice Tube YouTube channel. Sampath is reported to have commented on the production of the Chinese Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine in Sri Lanka.  Police arrested Sampath over the alleged false statement and he was later released on bail.
