Easter Sunday attacks: Over 195 in custody

01 May 2020

A total of 197 suspects in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attack are currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Terrorist Investigation Division (TID), according to Police Media Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne. Accordingly, a total of 119 suspects were held in CID custody while 78 were held in TID custody. However, the investigations are now progressing in a new direction as the CID uncovered a location in Sampur used by the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) terrorists for weapons training recently and investigators have also found that an organisation in Puttalam recruited cadres and indoctrinated them for the NTJ. Senaratne said the recent discoveries were made possible through information provided by a suspect who is currently in the custody of the TID under detention orders, and also through other investigations carried out by the TID. The suspect, who is currently in custody, had directed the investigating officers to the said location last week, and it was determined that this location had been used to provide weapons training to radicalised individuals, Senaratne added. Senaratne said the organisation in Puttalam had enrolled certain individuals and indoctrinated them. Senaratne also noted that Zahran Hashim, the mastermind behind the Easter attacks, had visited the Puttalam location and conducted sermons for individuals and showed them videos containing extremist religious ideologies. Further investigations are underway, the Police Spokesman said.
