Easter Sunday attacks: Sinister details uncovered

21 Apr 2020

Investigations into last year's Easter Sunday attacks have revealed more sinister details including a second attack that was planned by the terrorists who orchestrated the 21 April 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. Police Media Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne said that continued investigations and interrogations of already arrested suspects have uncovered more sinister details. “We have been able to find out that there was one particular individual who was the main propagandist. He was the one who indoctrinated individuals into Islamic radicals,” SP Senaratne said, adding that the suspect concerned was already in custody. He went on to say that another wave of terrorists had been trained for a second attack. “We were able to locate and apprehend the second group who had been trained in camps in Nuwara Eliya and Hambantota soon after the bombings last year,” he added. Last week, the brother of former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen was arrested along with several others in connection with the terror attacks. The Police Media Spokesman also revealed that a total of 119 persons had been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) so far over the Easter Sunday attacks of whom 40 are under detention orders, while the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has arrested 78 individuals of whom 52 are currently under detention orders.
