EC yet to decide on date
The Election Commission (EC) said it had not yet decided on a date to declare the presidential election.
There was speculation the EC would declare the date next Friday or Saturday. However, EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday (14) said the Commission had not yet reached a decision.
The EC said that at this moment only the Commission had the authority to declare the presidential election and not President Maithripala Sirisena.
EC Director General Saman Ratnayake told The Sunday Morning that there was no possibility for delaying the presidential election which should be held between 15 November and 7 December this year under the prevailing law of the country unless and otherwise the law is amended by the responsible authorities.
Furthermore, according to Ratnayake, the Commission would need at least two months to hold any election for preparations while nominations would need to be called between 20 September and 15 October.
