Egg Producers claim ‘millions’ of poultry lacking feed

Millions of local poultry animals are short of animal feed, including essential vitamins, the All-Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association claimed. Speaking at a press conference this week, Association President R.M. Sarath Rathnayake said that the prices of the main types of vitamins given to the animals have increased more than threefold. “Today, an egg costs more than Rs. 50. We have pointed out this risk on many occasions before. There is a situation in the country where one does not even know who the Livestock Minister is. The officials are not looking into it.” The cost of transportation of eggs to Colombo alone adds Rs. 5 to the final price, he said. “Today, egg production has fallen by 50%, not because of the producers. There are many who are responsible for this. We need to think about a programme that will bring foreign exchange into the country by raising the rural industries. We suggest that we should all discuss at one table, and solve these problems without getting lost along the way,” Rathnayake said. “An egg from India costs Rs. 18, but when it is brought to Sri Lanka, it costs Rs. 38-40. One such egg weighs about 35 grams, but our eggs are fresh and weigh about 65 grams each,” he added.
