Election law violations: Violators granted bail

The parliamentary election candidates arrested by the Police on Wednesday (5) for the violation of election laws have been granted bail, according to the Police Media Division. Accordingly, seven candidates have been arrested by the Police together with another 82 people for the violation of election laws, the Police said. As explained by the Police Media Division, election law violation is a bailable offense and therefore, all those who have been arrested so far have been granted bail. Around 415 persons have been arrested for complaints on election law violations since the general election 2020 was declared, the Police further said. Among the suspects arrested are 123 Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters, 38 United National Party (UNP) supporters, and 38 Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) supporters. By Sunday (2), about 347 complaints had been received by the Police Election Head Office, according to Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Priyantha Weerasooriya, the OIC of election activities of the Police Department.
