Several spill gates of reservoirs are being opened, including the Rantambe dam and the Randenigala dam, in an attempt to sabotage the generation of hydro-power by the Trade Union members of the Electricity Board, says Minister of Energy and Power Kanchana Wijesekera.
He made this statement while speaking in parliament today (09).
"The terrorist-like individuals involved in the trade unions are sabotaging the generation of hydro-power generation. They are opening the spill gates and allowing for the water in the dams to flow into the sea. With this, we lose hydro-power. This is an attempt to stop natural electricity generation and instead use diesel and coal. This is what the trade unions want," he stated.
Wijesekera further added that currently electricity is being purchased for a higher price by private diesel power plants, whereas hydro-power would have been the best alternate.
