Eleven extremist organisations to be banned; 54 suspects overseas arrested over Easter attacks: Minister briefs Parliament

10 Mar 2021

Action will be taken to ban 11 extremist organisations that had contributed directly and indirectly to make the groundwork for the Easter Sunday attacks, Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera said today. The Minister said this in a special statement made in Parliament on the measures that have been taken over the attacks and the progress of the investigations. He said that action will be taken against all the personnel who directly and indirectly aided Easter attacks. The Minister also said that the people should condemn religious extremism and not religions. “This attack has been influenced by extremism built up on Wahabism. We will ban ‘Wahab’ Institutions that promote ‘al-wala wal bara’ ideology that encourages hatred against non-Muslims,” the minister said. He also said 99 people have been arrested in Sri Lanka and 35 Sri Lankans abroad over the attacks after the new government came into power. "Out of the 54 suspects arrested so far in abroad in connection with the attacks, 50 have been brought down to Sri Lanka. The remaining four will be brought down once the legal affairs are completed in those countries," he said.
